
Kolkata, 23 February (H.S.): Troops of the Indian Army rescued 46 tourists stranded in high-altitude areas of East Sikkim following heavy snowfall, according to a statement issued on Monday by the Army’s Eastern Command headquarters in Kolkata.
As per the statement, sudden and intense snowfall hit vulnerable stretches of road in East Sikkim on Sunday. With temperatures dropping below freezing, several tourist vehicles became stranded, exposing both visitors and local residents to severe cold and harsh weather conditions.
Upon receiving information about the situation, Army personnel swiftly moved to the affected areas and launched rescue and relief operations. A total of 46 tourists were safely evacuated and shifted to the nearest Army camp.
The rescued individuals underwent medical examinations and were provided with warm shelter, hot meals, heating arrangements and essential relief supplies to mitigate the impact of extreme cold and high-altitude stress, the statement said.
Medical teams deployed at the site ensured that all rescued tourists were stable and properly cared for before any further movement.
In addition to the rescue operation, the Army facilitated the safe and orderly relocation of more than 150 tourist vehicles to secure locations.
The prompt response by the Indian Army helped avert a potential crisis and ensured the safety of those stranded amid severe weather conditions.
