Greater Chennai Corporation announces major education initiatives in new budget

Chennai, 18 February (H.S.) : The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance educational facilities and student welfare services for the 2026-27 academic year.

A key highlight of the announcement is the establishment of a Modern Science Centre, which will feature specialized laboratories for biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and computer science. This initiative is designed to provide students with increased practical learning opportunities and scientific exposure.

Additionally, the civic body will expand its specialized school network for children with muscular dystrophy to all remaining 14 zones, following the successful model of the existing facility in Thousand Lights.

To support the emotional well-being of students, the GCC is expanding its psychological counseling services. Seventeen new counselors will be appointed across 46 high schools under the Gender Lab initiative to assist adolescents with behavioral and emotional concerns.

Furthermore, the Corporation is focusing on inclusive education by launching bridge courses in three schools aimed at integrating dropouts, migrant children, and those who have never been enrolled into the mainstream school system. To improve accessibility, eleven new school buses will be purchased at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore to expand the current transport scheme.

The budget also prioritizes student health and physical education by allocating Rs 1.90 crore for yoga and self-defense training, benefiting over 59,000 students. Other significant measures include the recruitment of 180 temporary physical education teachers and an investment of Rs 40 crore for infrastructure improvements, such as repairing damaged buildings and constructing new classrooms.

These multi-faceted efforts reflect the Corporation’s commitment to providing holistic education and modernizing the infrastructure of government schools in the city.
