Chennai, 18 February (H.S.)
While tabling the first part of a high-level committee report on Union-State relations, the Chief Minister accused the Union Government of centralizing all powers and failing to respect the authority of state governments.
He emphasized that for a diverse country like India, true federalism must be the foundation of governance, ensuring that state governments are transformed into fully empowered and autonomous bodies.
During his address, Stalin expressed frustration over the current financial dependency of states, noting that Tamil Nadu is often forced to struggle and fight with the Union Government to receive its rightful funds. How long must we remain in a position where they give, and we merely receive? he questioned, highlighting the ongoing difficulties in securing rights over land and financial powers.
He asserted that the demand for state autonomy transcends political affiliations and should be accepted as a necessary step toward restoring effective and dignified governance at the regional level.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the DMK government is not prepared to continue in a subservient role and remains committed to the principle of State autonomy and Federalism at the Centre. He argued that shifting powers back to the states is essential for addressing the needs of the people more directly and efficiently.
By pushing for these constitutional changes, Stalin aims to redefine the current power dynamic, ensuring that states can operate independently without constant interference or reliance on the central administration for basic rights and resources.
