Chennai, 18 February (H.S.) : The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has officially floated a tender to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and feasibility study for a proposed integrated multi-modal transport hub at Guindy.
This project is set to transform the Guindy area into a major transit complex, seamlessly linking the Chennai Beach-Tambaram suburban rail corridor, the Metro services, and a modern bus terminus. The initiative gains immense significance as Guindy currently serves as a critical junction for over one lakh daily commuters.
The proposed hub will be developed on a 3.48-acre land parcel located opposite the Guindy Metro station. According to CMRL officials, the facility will include a ground-level bus terminal for the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), basement parking for private vehicles, and a multi-storey commercial complex.
A foot overbridge equipped with lifts and escalators is also planned to ensure smooth connectivity between the suburban railway station and the Metro station. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu had previously announced an allocation of Rs 50 crore for this development during his budget speech, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving urban mobility.
The consultant appointed through this tender will be responsible for conducting market analysis, land-use mapping, and architectural planning for the site. Given its proximity to the Chennai airport, the project must also secure height clearances from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) before finalising the number of floors.
Once completed, the integrated hub will serve as a structured solution to the current traffic bottlenecks in the area, offering passengers a modern and efficient interchange experience.
