Imphal, 15 February (HS): Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sah-Sarkaryawah Dr Krishnagopal on Sunday called for greater unity among Hindus and collective efforts to address social challenges, while speaking at a Hindu Sammelan held at Dharmasala in Thangal Bazar, Imphal West. The programme was organised by the Bazar Upanagar Hindu Sammelan Samiti as part of the RSS’s centenary year celebrations.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Krishnagopal said that the idea of uniting Hindus was once considered impossible, which led to the founding of the RSS in 1925 in Nagpur by KB Hedgewar with a single shakha. He stated that over the past century, the organisation has expanded to nearly 90,000 shakhas across the country.
Describing Bharat as a civilisation rooted in compassion and love, he said Hindus are defined by karuna and prem, caring not only for fellow human beings but also for birds, rivers, lakes, hills and nature. He added that ensuring no one sleeps hungry and extending help to the needy are integral to Hindu values.
Dr Krishnagopal said Hindus come from diverse social and occupational backgrounds, including cobblers, sculptors, artists and traders and follow varied modes of worship. He maintained that Bharat provides space for people of different castes, communities and beliefs to live together peacefully and said such Sammelans are aimed at strengthening social harmony and unity.
Referring to global conflicts in regions such as Russia, Pakistan, Europe and the Middle East, he attributed Bharat’s resilience to adherence to Dharma, which he described as performing one’s duties sincerely without harming others. He termed Bharat one of the world’s oldest surviving civilisations.
Expressing concern over incidents reflecting weakening family bonds, he cited cases of crimes involving close relatives and said the erosion of family values was a matter of concern. He urged families to spend more time together and reinforce traditional values. On the issue of drug abuse, he called for collective efforts to keep children away from intoxicants such as drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
He also praised the people of Manipur for their patience and peaceful approach during challenging times. Cultural performances by various communities were presented during the programme.
Parallel Sammelans were organised at multiple locations, including Wangkhei, Khurai, Uripok, Ningthoukhong and Oinam. According to organisers, a total of 64 such events are being held across Manipur, including in Imphal, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Senapati, Churachandpur, Chandel, Ukhrul and Tamenglong districts and will continue through late February.
