
New Delhi, 15 February (H.S.): India has witnessed a record increase in electricity generation capacity during the first 10 months of the current financial year 2025-26. Marking the largest addition in this fiscal year to date, power generation capacity has grown by more than 11 percent, bringing the total installed capacity to 520,510.95 megawatts with an increment of 52,537 megawatts.
According to the Ministry of Power, of the total capacity added as of January 31 this year, 39,657 megawatts come from renewable energy sources. This includes 34,955 megawatts from solar power and 4,613 megawatts from wind power. The ministry noted that this represents the largest single-year capacity expansion to date, surpassing the previous record of 34,054 megawatts added in 2024-25.
India's overall installed capacity comprises 248,541.62 megawatts from fossil fuel-based sources. In contrast, non-fossil sources account for 271,969.33 megawatts, including 8,780 megawatts from nuclear energy and 263,189.33 megawatts from renewable energy.
