New Delhi, 15 February (H.S.): Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated India's first Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)-based Public Distribution System (PDS) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on Sunday. He also launched the Annapurna machine for automated ration dispensing, attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi.
Minister Shah credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for extending Digital India to ration distribution, modernizing the system for affordable grain delivery to the poor with enhanced simplicity and transparency. This initiative will eradicate corruption in PDS by enabling direct digital transfers, akin to Direct Benefit Transfer's impact, thereby eliminating middlemen's interference.
The newly unveiled Annapurna machine dispenses 25 kg of grain in just 35 seconds, ensuring precise quantity and quality control. Shah highlighted its role in streamlining operations and guaranteeing fair access.
Shah announced plans to implement this system nationwide within the next three to four years, empowering every eligible beneficiary with transparent ration entitlements. He noted the government's provision of 5 kg free grain monthly to 80 crore citizens, underscoring how such reforms fortify food security and elevate living standards for millions.
