Kochi , 13 Feb (H.S.):In a significant development for the judiciary in Kerala, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of seven Additional Judges of the Kerala High Court as Permanent Judges, a move expected to strengthen the court’s functioning and address the growing case backlog.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Collegium chaired by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant. The recommendation was finalized during the Collegium’s sitting held yesterday, marking an important step in consolidating judicial strength at one of the country’s busiest High Courts.

The judges recommended for permanent appointment are Justice M.A. Abdul Hakkim, Justice V. Shyam Kumar, Justice Harishankar V. Menon, Justice Manu Sreedharan Nair, Justice Easwaran Subramani, Justice Manoj P.M., and Justice M.B. Snehalatha. All seven have been serving as Additional Judges and are now set to assume permanent positions upon formal approval by the Central government.

Of the seven, six judges — Justices Abdul Hakkim, Shyam Kumar, Harishankar V. Menon, Manu Sreedharan Nair, Easwaran Subramani, and Manoj P.M. — were appointed as Additional Judges on March 22, 2024. Justice M.B. Snehalatha joined slightly later, taking oath as an Additional Judge on April 25, 2024. During their tenure, they have handled a wide range of civil, criminal, constitutional, and service matters, earning recognition for their judicial efficiency and balanced approach.

Once the Collegium’s recommendation is accepted and notified by the Union government, the number of Permanent Judges in the Kerala High Court will rise to 35. In addition, five judges will continue to serve as Additional Judges. The increase in permanent judicial strength is expected to improve case disposal rates and reduce delays, particularly at a time when the High Court is dealing with a heavy pendency of cases.

Legal experts view the move as a positive step toward ensuring stability and continuity in judicial administration. Permanent appointments allow judges to take up long-term responsibilities and contribute more effectively to institutional reforms.

The recommendation now awaits formal clearance from the Centre, after which the appointments will be officially notified.
