Thiruvananthapuram, 13 Feb (H.S.):Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will not be travelling to the Vatican for a scheduled meeting with the Pope, citing pressing commitments related to the upcoming elections.
The development was confirmed by K.V. Thomas, the Special Representative of the Kerala Government in New Delhi, who said the Chief Minister had to withdraw from the visit due to his busy political schedule.
Vijayan had earlier received an invitation to meet the Pope at the Vatican on March 4 as part of a Kerala delegation. The meeting was expected to be a significant diplomatic and cultural engagement, symbolising Kerala’s longstanding ties with the global Christian community and the Vatican. The invitation extended to a total of 16 members, including the Chief Minister and K.V. Thomas.
However, with the Assembly election-related responsibilities intensifying, the Chief Minister decided to remain in the state to oversee campaign and governance matters. Officials indicated that the decision was taken keeping administrative priorities and the political climate in mind.
Despite the Chief Minister’s absence, the rest of the Kerala delegation will proceed with the visit. Thomas clarified that the trip will now be considered an unofficial visit rather than an official government mission. The delegation is still expected to hold discussions and meet the Pope as originally planned.
Calling the opportunity a “moment of pride” for Kerala, Thomas said the meeting reflects the state’s inclusive and multicultural ethos. He added that the delegation would convey the Chief Minister’s greetings and share details about Kerala’s ongoing initiatives and concerns with the Pope during their interaction.
The visit is viewed as symbolically important, particularly given Kerala’s large Christian population and its historical connections with the Vatican through faith, education, and social service institutions. Observers note that such engagements often strengthen cultural goodwill and international relationships.
While Vijayan’s absence may slightly alter the nature of the programme, the delegation’s participation ensures Kerala remains represented at the high-profile gathering. The team is expected to return after completing the scheduled engagements in Rome and the Vatican.
