Kolkata, 07 January (H.S.): A foreign passenger fell critically ill during an international flight on Tuesday night, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency landing in Kolkata. The passenger, identified as 66-year-old German national Ludwig Manfred Buhler, has been admitted to a private hospital located along the EM Bypass in the city. Hospital sources said he has suffered a severe brain haemorrhage and requires immediate surgery.
The incident occurred aboard a Vietnam Airlines international flight carrying 276 passengers from Frankfurt to Hanoi. Buhler, who was travelling alone, suddenly complained of discomfort during the journey, and his condition deteriorated rapidly while the aircraft was in the air.
Considering the seriousness of the situation, the pilot informed Kolkata Air Traffic Control while flying over Varanasi and requested emergency medical assistance. Following this, a swift decision was taken to divert the aircraft, which subsequently landed at Kolkata airport.
Upon arrival, a medical team stationed at the airport conducted a preliminary examination of the passenger. Given his critical condition, he was immediately shifted to a private hospital near the EM Bypass for advanced medical care.
Doctors at the hospital later confirmed that Buhler had suffered a severe brain haemorrhage. His condition remains critical, and an emergency operation has been advised. As the patient was travelling alone, the hospital authorities have initiated contact with the German Embassy to coordinate further medical procedures and necessary formalities.
The passenger is currently under close observation by a specialised medical team. Following the emergency landing, arrangements were made to facilitate the onward journey of the other passengers on board the flight.
