New Delhi, 08 January (H.S.): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognizance on Thursday of media reports detailing a spike in typhoid cases in Gandhinagar city due to contaminated drinking water, issuing a notice to the Gujarat Chief Secretary for a detailed report within two weeks.

According to the NHRC communiqué, recent leaks in newly laid water pipelines have allowed sewage to infiltrate the potable supply, triggering the outbreak. The state health department confirmed 70 active cases concentrated in a specific Gandhinagar area, predominantly affecting children.

The commission directed the Chief Secretary to detail the current health status of typhoid patients—both outpatients and inpatients—and outline preventive measures to avert recurrence, observing that verified reports raise grave human rights violation concerns.
