Chennai, 30 January (H.S.) : A 30 year old differently abled man who set himself on fire outside the State Human Rights Commission SHRC office in RA Puram passed away early Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Albert Anthony Samy, a native of Virudhunagar who was residing in Velachery. The tragic incident occurred on Thursday when Samy attempted self immolation in front of the commission office.
Police personnel on duty immediately intervened to extinguish the flames and rushed him to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. Despite receiving intensive medical care for his severe burn injuries, he succumbed during the early hours of the day.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the authorities revealed that Samy was a petitioner before the SHRC. The extreme step was reportedly linked to a case registered against him by the Virudhunagar cyber crime wing in September last year. This case was initiated following a complaint from a woman regarding a financial dispute.
The Abhiramapuram police have officially registered a case regarding the self immolation and are conducting a thorough probe into the circumstances. According to senior police officials, the investigation aims to determine if any specific grievances or administrative pressures led the victim to take such a drastic measure at a public office.
The authorities have emphasized that they are looking into all records related to his previous petitions and the ongoing legal disputes in Virudhunagar to provide a clear version of the events.
