Morigaon (Assam), 22 January (HS): The historic Jonbeel Mela commenced at Jagiroad on Thursday with traditional rituals, marking the beginning of a three-day celebration scheduled to continue till January 24 on the banks of the Jonbeel.

The inaugural day of the age-old fair began with auspicious rituals at the Deoshal Charibhai Shivathan, where traditional prayers were offered in accordance with customary norms. As part of the rituals, eggs were sacrificed under the Gavaru mango tree and omens were observed by the royal priests and officials, following centuries-old traditions. Subsequent ceremonial programmes were then held at the main mela venue.

One of the unique highlights of the Jonbeel Mela is the traditional barter system, which replaces modern currency and revives the centuries-old practice of exchange of goods, drawing participants from both hill and plain areas.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will attend the mela and ceremonially confer Raj Bhatta on 22 Tiwa kings during the traditional Tiwa royal court proceedings. The hill communities, popularly known as ‘Mama-Mami’, are also expected to arrive at the fair for the exchange of goods.

Earlier in the day, the mela was formally inaugurated with flag hoisting and other auspicious ceremonies, along with the inauguration of structures associated with Tiwa community life. On January 23, the historic barter market will be formally opened in the morning, followed by the traditional community fishing event at Jonbeel.

The three-day fair will also feature poetry meets in Tiwa and Assamese languages, cultural programmes showcasing traditional dances and songs, and a food festival offering local delicacies, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of central Assam.-----------
