Bhubaneswar, 21 January (H.S.): Security was heightened at the revered Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri after a bomb threat surfaced on social media, triggering panic in the temple town on Wednesday. Acting swiftly, the district police detained a suspect in connection with the threat and intensified security arrangements in and around the shrine.
According to police officials, the threat message was posted from a Facebook account bearing the name “Julie Rani Panda.” The post allegedly contained objectionable and inflammatory content, claiming that an explosive device would be detonated at the Jagannath Temple. It also reportedly threatened a shooting at the Puri Grand Centre, raising serious concerns among pilgrims, local residents, and authorities.
The situation escalated further after the post allegedly mentioned plans to shoot Member of Parliament Subhashish Khuntia, prompting immediate police action. Following the circulation of the message, a formal complaint was lodged, urging law enforcement agencies to take urgent preventive measures.
Taking the threat seriously, Puri police launched a detailed investigation to trace the origin of the post. A special team analysed the social media account, examined digital footprints including the Facebook URL, and tracked potential suspects as part of the probe.
Based on preliminary findings, one individual has been taken into custody and is currently being questioned. Police officials said the motive behind the post is being examined, and investigations are underway to determine whether the threat was an isolated incident or part of a larger conspiracy.
As a precautionary measure, security arrangements at the Jagannath Temple and other sensitive locations in Puri have been reviewed and strengthened. Authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with the administration while investigations continue.
