Guwahati, Assam, 21 January (HS): Dispur Police have arrested a said singer, identified as Bani Medhi, on charges of allegedly cheating several people by collecting money from them on the pretext of providing jobs, officials said on Wednesday.

According to the police, the accused allegedly promised employment to multiple individuals and extracted substantial sums from them as “processing fees” and other charges. Victims later realised they had been duped when no jobs materialised and attempts to contact the accused failed.

Following complaints from the affected persons, Dispur Police initiated an investigation and subsequently apprehended Medhi. Preliminary inquiry suggests that the accused may have targeted people seeking employment by exploiting their vulnerability and trust.

Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the total amount involved, identify additional victims, and determine whether others were involved in the scam. Legal proceedings have been initiated, and the accused has been produced before a court.-----------
