Guwahati (Assam), 06 August (HS): Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), Vijaya Rahatkar, visited the Assam Police Headquarters on Wednesday and held a review meeting with the Director General of Police, Harmeet Singh and other senior officers. The meeting focused on the safety and security of women and girl children across the state.

During the session, Assam Police gave a detailed presentation on various initiatives taken under the leadership of the Chief Minister to curb crimes against women. The presentation highlighted special drives against child marriage, which have not only reduced the incidence of such cases but also contributed to lowering the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR), Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), and school dropout rates among girls.

The NCW Chairperson appreciated the efforts of the Assam Police and the state government, and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in implementing programs, training, and awareness campaigns for women’s empowerment and safety. She specifically highlighted the need to train women in Artificial Intelligence (AI) under the ‘AI Sakshar Nari’ initiative.

She also called for greater involvement of public representatives in community-level meetings to strengthen women’s rights at the grassroots level.

Following the review meeting, Rahatkar inaugurated the ‘Yashoda AI’ training program—an NCW initiative aimed at educating women across India about AI and cyber safety. The launch session in Guwahati was attended by 80 police officers from different regions of Assam.

DGP Harmeet Singh stated that, as envisioned by the Chief Minister, proactive measures by Assam Police have led to improved charge-sheet filing, higher conviction rates, and enhanced public service delivery.

The meeting was also attended by NCW member Delina Khongdup, Special DGP (CID) MP Gupta, Principal Secretary (WCD) Mukesh Sahu, IGP (CID) Sanjukta Parashar, Guwahati Police Commissioner PS Mahanta, and other senior officials from Assam Police and the NCW.
