Guwahati, 30 August (HS): The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a sharp attack on Congress, accusing the party of insulting women. Addressing a press conference at the state party headquarters, BJP spokesperson Dr. Ankita Dutta criticized Rahul Gandhi for using derogatory language about the Prime Minister’s late mother during his Bihar visit, calling it “shameful and disrespectful to motherhood.” She announced that BJP Assam will hold protest programmes across districts on August 31 and September 1.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that under the Sakhi Express scheme, 9,704 scooties have been distributed to women and self-help groups are being monitored for effective functioning. He further said arrangements will be made to display the historic Vrindavani Vastra in Assam.

BJP leaders also pointed out that India’s GDP grew by 7.8% in the April–June quarter and that Assam performed best in the State Energy Efficiency Index among 36 states and eight union territories, particularly in agriculture and irrigation sectors.

Party spokesperson Brajen Mahanta emphasized that BJP has always honored eminent personalities beyond political lines. He cited examples such as awarding Bharat Ratna to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Gopinath Bordoloi, and conferring Padma Bhushan on former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in 2021. In contrast, he said Congress leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi awarded Bharat Ratna to themselves while in office.

Meanwhile, spokesperson Dr. Mominul Awal asserted that the current government’s firm stand ensures that no one who leaves Assam for Bangladesh can return to engage in politics. He claimed that earlier weak governments allowed such practices, but under BJP, this environment no longer exists.

The BJP declared with confidence that with public support, it will return to power in Assam in 2026 and that “no outsider” will be able to enter the Assam Legislative Assembly..--------
