Delhi, 26 July (H.S.): PM Narendra Modi met with Maldivian Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef in Male on Saturday, conveying best wishes for the 60th anniversary of Independence Day. They discussed the special and deep-rooted relationship between India and the Maldives,

with Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef expressing gratitude for India's continuous assistance during challenging times and highlighting the importance of parliamentary ties.

PM Modi also met Abdul Raheem Abdulla, the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, where he extended greetings on the same occasion. The Speaker thanked India for its commitment to strengthening ties between the two democracies. PM Modi held discussions with former President Mohamed Nasheed, who expressed appreciation for India's support in enhancing bilateral relations. They noted the excellent people-to-people ties fostered by both nations.

Additionally, PM Modi engaged with leaders from various political parties in the Maldives, exemplifying bipartisan support for the India-Maldives friendship. During this interaction, they reaffirmed the commitment to reinforce their relationship, building on shared values and vibrant community ties. Maldivian leaders thanked PM Modi for developmental support benefiting Maldivians.

PM Modi interacted with ITEC alumni from the Maldives, who have participated in India's capacity-building programs. He highlighted the significance of capacity building in the India-Maldives relationship, engaging with police officials, government workers, paramedics, and nurses, who reflect the spirit of friendship between the two nations.

While meeting with the Indian community in the Maldives, PM Modi recognized their contributions to strengthening bilateral ties. He attended the 60th Independence Day celebrations as Guest of Honour at Republic Square in Male, underscoring India’s role as a reliable partner and first responder, aligned with its 'Neighbourhood First' policy.

Concluding his fruitful state visit, PM Modi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the milestone independence celebrations and acknowledged the transformation and global leadership of the Maldives over the years.

In a post on X ,PM Modi wrote,As I conclude this productive visit to the Maldives, I extend my heartfelt thanks to President Muizzu, the Government and people of the Maldives for their warmth. I am deeply honoured to have witnessed the 60th Independence Day celebrations. The productive talks with President Muizzu will add significant energy to our bilateral relations.

The PM's visit showcased the commitment to a stronger, vibrant relationship built on historical ties, mutual support, and shared aspirations for the future, marking a significant moment in India-Maldives diplomacy.
