Delhi, 2 May (H.S.): President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the vital role of senior citizens as sources of wisdom and tradition during the 'Ageing with Dignity' programme at Rashtrapati Bhavan. She called for collective responsibility to uphold the dignity, happiness, and well-being of India’s elderly population, highlighting their significant contributions in shaping society and mentoring future generations. She stated, Senior citizens are a vital link to our past and guides to our future, urging society to commit to their welfare and learn from their experiences.

Murmu urged citizens to value and honour the presence of senior citizens, acknowledging their emotional and psychological support within families. She praised the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for launching a dedicated portal for the elderly, describing it as a one-stop digital platform for their needs. She reflected on cultural values that emphasize respect for elders, noting how grandparents often play a crucial role in children's lives.

However, she expressed concern about challenges faced by the elderly, especially as young people migrate for job opportunities, leaving them feeling lonely and undervalued. Some see the elderly as a burden, she remarked. Murmu recognized senior citizens as a storehouse of knowledge that can lead the youth and contribute to national progress. Before the programme, she interacted with five senior citizens who shared their life experiences, reinforcing their role in fostering societal unity. Murmu also mentioned government initiatives to enhance the quality of life for elders, underscoring that their health is essential for guiding families and society.
