New Delhi, April 2 (HS) : The West Indies is set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its historic 1975 World Cup victory, achieved on June 21, 1975, at Lord's Cricket Ground in London. At that time, it was referred to as the 'Prudential World Cup.' Clive Lloyd's magnificent century against Australia in the finals secured a 17-run victory for the West Indies, and Lloyd lifted the trophy.
This historic commemorative event for the West Indies will be held in Barbados, although the date has not yet been announced.
World-famous cricketer Michael Holding welcomed this initiative, stating, This is a great idea. I don’t know the details, but it's wonderful that we are recognizing our achievements.
Holding, who was not part of the 1975 World Cup winning team, was a member of the West Indies squad in the 1979 and 1983 World Cups. In 1983, India defeated the West Indies in the finals.
Holding further remarked, All other countries take pride in their achievements, and we should also write our story and celebrate our accomplishments.
The 1975 World Cup win is considered one of the greatest moments in West Indies cricket history, coinciding with their ascendancy to the pinnacle of world cricket. The West Indies maintained dominance for the next decade, but thereafter the team's performance declined, and they have not fully recovered since.
CWI President Dr. Kishore Shallow recently announced the plan for this event during a media conference. He stated, This year we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of our first World Cup win in 1975. We are in the final stages of organizing the event, with some details being finalized.
Dr. Shallow informed the SportsMax website, It will be a major part of our annual calendar. There are 12 surviving members of this team, and we will honor them at this ceremony in Barbados. It will be a fantastic occasion for us, and we are also looking forward to our home series.
The surviving 12 members of the squad are Gordon Greenidge (73), Alvin Kallicharran (76), Rohan Kanhai (89), Clive Lloyd (80), Viv Richards (73), Bernard Julien (75), Deryck Murray (81), Vanburn Holder (79), Andy Roberts (74), Collis KIng (73), Lance Gibbs (90) and Maurice Foster (81). The two players who are no more are Roy Fredericks (died in September 2000 at the age of 57) and Keith Boyce (died in October 1996 at the age of 53).
