New Delhi, April 16 (H.S.): Justice B.R. Gavai has been nominated as the next Chief Justice of India, succeeding Sanjeev Khanna, who will retire on May 13. Justice Gavai will take the oath of office on May 14 and will serve for approximately six months, until November 23.
The current Chief Justice has traditionally recommended the most senior judge of the Supreme Court to the government during the final month of their term, and the government generally accepts this advice.
Justice Gavai’s name has been sent to the Ministry of Law and Justice for approval. He began practicing law on March 16, 1985, initially at the Bombay High Court, later serving the Maharashtra government as a lawyer from 1992 to 2000. He was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003 and became a Supreme Court judge on May 24, 2019. Justice Gavai will be the 52nd Chief Justice of India.
