Court sends Tahawwur Rana to 18 days in NIA custody

New Delhi, April 11(H.S.): The mastermind of the Mumbai attacks, Tahawwur Hussain Rana, was arrested upon his arrival in India. The NIA brought him to Patiala House Court, where he was granted 18 days of custody, though the agency had sought 20 days.

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, the key co-conspirator in the 26/11 Mumbai Terrorist attacks, was arrested upon arriving in India and presented at Patiala House Court, where the NIA was granted 18 days of custody instead of the 20 days they requested. The court proceedings, held in a closed room, involved Rana's lawyer Piyush Sachdeva and NIA prosecutor Dayanand Krishnan.

The NIA argued for custody based on strong evidence, including an email from Rana, essential for interrogating him about his involvement in the 26/11 attacks. The agency emphasized the need to uncover the conspiracy linked to the attacks, highlighting his connection with David Coleman Headley, who orchestrated the operation. The NIA stated that Headley had communicated details to Rana, including information about other conspirators like Ilyas Kashmiri and Abdur Rehman.

On November 26, 2008, ten terrorists unleashed coordinated assaults across Mumbai, targeting key locations and sustaining a siege that lasted two days, culminating in the deaths of nine attackers and the capture of Ajmal Kasab, who was later executed. Strict security measures have been implemented as the NIA prepares to interrogate Rana at their headquarters.
