Pune, April 10 (H.S.): The Indian team secured a 2-1 victory against Thailand on Wednesday in the Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group 1, taking place at the Mahalunge Balewadi Tennis Complex in Pune.
Shrivalli Bhamidipaty set the rhythm for the host team with a fantastic win. Previously, the experienced duo of Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare helped India advance in the tournament.
Shrivalli Bhamidipati made a strong comeback, replicating her performance from the first day against Thailand's Lanalana Tararudi.
The experienced pair of Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare annihilated their opponents in just one hour and 15 minutes, showcasing several strokes to win 6-2, 6-4, giving India a 1-0 lead against Thailand.
In the second match of the day, Sahaja Yamalapalli faced Mananchaya Sawangkeaw, which proved to be an exciting contest. Both players displayed excellent tennis against each other. Mananchaya rallied to take the first set 6-3. Prior to that, Sahaja showed tremendous patience and determination to win the second set 7-6 [7-3]. Unfortunately, after trailing 0-1 in the final set, the young Indian star had to withdraw from the match due to an injury, bringing the thrilling contest to an end after 2 hours and 23 minutes and leveling the tie at 1-1 between the two countries.
In the doubles match, after a tough challenge, the experienced Indian pair of Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare defeated Thailand's Peangtarn Plipuech and Pacharint Cheepchandej. The Indians won the first set, but they fell behind in the second set. However, they performed brilliantly in the tie-break and won the super tie-break with a score of 7-6, 3-6, 10-3 in one hour and 55 minutes.
