Bucharest, April 1 (H.S.): Romanian tennis player Filip Cristian Jianu achieved a remarkable victory by defeating American Nishesh Basavareddy 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Tiriac Open.

The 23-year-old wildcard player, who is ranked 241st in the ATP rankings, defeated the 108th-ranked Basavareddy in 93 minutes. Although the American player hit more winners (22-13), he also made more unforced errors (16-9), which benefited Jianu.

With this win, Jianu earned a prize money of 10,460 euros (11,317 US dollars) and 25 ATP points. He will now face either Valentin Vacherot or Damir Jumhur in the pre-quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, another Romanian player, Luca Preda, was eliminated in the first round after losing to Vacherot 6-2, 6-3. He received 3,200 euros (3,462 US dollars) and 7 ATP points.

The Tiriac Open, which is an ATP 250 clay court tournament, is being held from March 31 to April 6 at the National Tennis Center in Bucharest.
