Kolkata, 23 December (H.S.): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Amit Malviya launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee late Monday night, sharing a sharp statement on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He said the case should be recorded as one of the worst examples of the Chief Minister's insensitivity towards victims of rape and murder in West Bengal.
Referring to the 2022 Hanskhali minor gang-rape case, Amit Malviya said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had at the time termed the heinous crime a love affair and even questioned whether the victim was already pregnant. He alleged that the Chief Minister's statements had put the victim on trial.
The BJP leader said that now the court has convicted nine accused in the case, including the son of a Trinamool Congress leader, thus revealing the truth that was initially denied. He claimed that it was only after the Chief Minister's character assassination of the minor victim that the Calcutta High Court decided to transfer the case from the state police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Amit Malviya also said that this is not an isolated incident. He alleged that earlier too, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had made remarks questioning the character of the victim in the Park Street rape case.
In his post, Malviya said that such statements reflect a disturbing trend of undermining and casting doubt on victims instead of standing with them. He claimed that justice was served in this case, but only after institutional intervention and judicial action.
