Muzaffarnagar, 22 Dec (HS): Police
have arrested over 100 farmers' activists, including a district-level leader,
for allegedly blocking traffic and causing property damage during a
demonstration at the Jagahedi toll plaza in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar
district, police said on Monday. According to Circle Officer Neeraj Singh, a
case has been filed at Titawi police station against over 100 people, 20 of
whom have been identified, in connection with the event that occurred on Sunday
evening. Nikhil Choudhry, district head of a farmers' organization that held a
rally near the toll plaza, was among those booked, according to police. The
suspects have been charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the
Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, and an inquiry is now continuing,
Singh added.
According to the
police, hundreds of activists gathered at the Jagahedi toll plaza and conducted
a sit-in, saying that toll plaza staff misbehaved with farmers. Traffic on the
roadway was impeded throughout the demonstration, according to reports. The
demonstrators then filed a 13-point statement to the district administration,
requesting action on their complaints, according to authorities.
