THANE, 16 November (H.S.): A late-night structural failure at a two-storey chawl in Thane's Diva area resulted in the dramatic rescue of 30 residents who became trapped after a balcony collapsed on Saturday. The incident occurred at approximately 11:36 p.m. at the Savalaram Smriti Chawl.Officials from the Thane Municipal Corporation's disaster management cell confirmed that no injuries were reported. A swift, coordinated response was initiated after an alert was received, with teams from the disaster cell, local police, and fire personnel being promptly dispatched to the scene.
Yasin Tadvi, the chief of the disaster management cell, stated that the collapse of the gallery, or balcony, had blocked access for a number of the residents. Fire brigade personnel successfully executed a rescue operation, ensuring all 30 trapped individuals were brought to safety without harm.
The chawl, which contains 21 flats and housed between 50 to 55 people, has now been declared unsafe by civic officials. As a precautionary measure, all flats in the building have been evacuated to prevent any further risk to residents.
