Water resources department proposes Rupees 12 crore revamp for Puthagaram lake

Chennai, 14 November (H.S.) : Amid ongoing efforts for flood mitigation in the city, the Water Resources Department (WRD) has proposed a comprehensive restoration of the Puthagaram lake in Surapet at a cost of Rupees 12 crore.

The lake, located on the outskirts of Chennai between Puzhal and Korattur, is a significant contributor to the city's water supply. The renovation is considered vital, especially since surplus water from the nearby Korattur lake often inundates Surapet due to the loss of a proper channel for floodwater to drain into the larger Retteri lake.

A WRD official confirmed that the extensive renovation project is primarily aimed at restoring the lake’s storage capacity, securing its structure, and ensuring controlled water flow. The scope of work includes strengthening the lake bund, removing accumulated silt, and undertaking dredging operations to maximize capacity.

Additionally, we plan to construct a toe wall, revetment, a kerb wall, and footpath arrangements for the bunds, along with regulator arrangements in the tank to allow for controlled release and efficient feeding of the downstream Retteri lake, the official added, stressing the works are crucial for flood control.

Ward 32 Councillor E Elumalai highlighted the long-standing issues facing the lake, including encroachment by both commercial establishments and residential buildings, and noted that the restoration works have been halted as a case is pending before the National Green Tribunal. However, providing an update on the matter, the WRD official stated that once the work order is issued, the encroachments will be removed following directions from the Tahsildar.

The official further clarified, First, we focus on removing the commercial establishment, and subsequently, we will address the residential houses. Rejuvenating the lake is expected to provide significant relief to residents during the monsoon season.
