Misunderstanding is being created on Chakma-Hajong issue: Kiren Rijiju

Itanagar, April 25 (HS): Bharatiya Janata Party national leader and former union Minister Kiren Rijiju has said that efforts are being made to create misunderstandings regarding the issue of Chakma-Hajong refugees.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Kiren Rijiju clarified that he had never said that Chakma-Hajong refugees would be settled in Assam. He said that his statement has been distorted by some vested interests to tarnish the image of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in Assam.

Kiren Rijiju today clarified that he had said that it is not possible for Chakma-Hajong refugees to live in Arunachal Pradesh after the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act. Discussions are being held to settle them somewhere away from Arunachal Pradesh. He said that in this context he has discussed with union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Dr. Sarma.

He clarified that after the enactment of the new law, Chakma refugees cannot live in Arunachal Pradesh under any circumstances. He said that discussions are being held to settle them somewhere outside Arunachal Pradesh.
