Mamata breaks silence on Sandeshkhali case, says police taken action


Howrah, 12 February(HS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday broke her silence on the Sandeshkhali incident. Regarding the ongoing violence in Sandeshkhali area of North 24 Parganas since last Wednesday, the Chief Minister said that the State Government has taken appropriate action in this matter.

Mamata Banerjee spoke to the media before boarding a helicopter at Dumurjula in Howrah to attend a government service delivery program in Hooghly's Arambagh. She said, the state government is taking appropriate steps. The State Women Commission has also been sent there. The police have also arrested the accused.

West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose cut short his visit to Kerala and reached Sandeshkhali on Monday. Commenting on his visit, the Chief Minister said, “You can go wherever you want. I have also sent the State Women's Commission. They have given a report.'' Mamta further said, ''And those against whom there is anger, the police have arrested them.''

Notably, On January 5, ED officers were attacked in Sandeshkhali. The main accused in that incident was Trinamool leader Sheikh Shahjahan. The Central Investigation Agency had conducted a search operation at his house. Shahjahan is absconding after the attack on ED officials.

At present the police have arrested Trinamool leaders Uttam Sardar and Shibu Hazra. The local women had accused these two along with Sheikh Shahjahan of carrying out criminal activities in Sandeshkhali and are demanding the arrest of all three. After the violence that broke out in the area since Wednesday, Section 144 has been imposed in the entire area since Friday.
