Kamrup (Assam), 26 December (HS): A herd of nine elephants narrowly escaped a potential train accident near Rangia after the timely intervention of a local youth, officials said on Friday.
According to sources, the incident occurred when the elephants were crossing the railway track in the Rangia area. Noticing the herd on the tracks and an approaching train, a vigilant youth from Rangia acted swiftly and alerted the railway authorities, enabling them to take immediate preventive measures.
His prompt action helped avert a major mishap, ensuring the safety of all nine elephants. Railway officials and forest department personnel later reached the spot and safely guided the herd away from the tracks.
The incident has drawn appreciation for the youth’s presence of mind, highlighting the crucial role of public awareness and cooperation in preventing human-wildlife conflicts and railway accidents.
It is noteworthy that just two days ago, the lives of elephants were saved on the same railway line thanks to the quick thinking of a young man. The railway authorities had also rewarded the young man for providing information about the elephants.----------
