New Delhi, 3 December (H.S.): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has conducted raids in eight private medical colleges in West Bengal and a total of 28 medical colleges across the country on Tuesday morning.

The raids were carried out in response to allegations of corruption and irregularities in the admission process under the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) quota.

During the raids, the houses and institutions of the medical college owners were searched. The ED's focus was on the Haldia house of former CPI(M) MP Laxman Seth, as well as medical colleges in Bardhaman, Birbhum, and Taratala area of Kolkata. It is alleged that these colleges admitted ineligible students under the NRI quota by taking large sums of money and using fake certificates.

The Supreme Court had previously expressed its displeasure with this issue, prompting the ED to take action. Among the colleges being raided is one owned by Malay Peet, who is also facing serious charges related to cattle smuggling and recruitment scams.
