In a mob lynching case that took place in Karanda village under Memari police station in East Bardhaman district in September 2011, a Burdwan court has sentenced nine convicts including three women to life imprisonment.

As per information, a person named Bhootnath Malik was beaten to death by a mob in Karanda village under Memari police station on 10 September 2011. According to the police and local sources, a few days before the incident, Navan Utsav was organized in that village. The person had done some absurd act there. He was called to the Salsi Sabha in the village regarding that incident. But he refused to go there.

People enraged by this incident beat Bhootnath Malik badly on the banks of Phulpukur pond. After that, he was dragged to a club in the village and beaten again. The police recovered the dead body of Bhootnath.

Ganesh Malik, brother of the deceased, lodged a written complaint with the police. The police investigated and arrested villagers including women. The case was being heard in the fifth court of the additional district and sessions court in the bench of Judge Debashree Haldar. The police filed a chargesheet against 26 people. The trial of the case lasted for more than a decade.

On Monday, the judge sentenced nine people, including three women, to life imprisonment.

The convicts include Ajay Pandit, Raju Pandit, Mohan Pandit, Kavita Pandit, Madan Durlabh, Alo Bagh, Pichar Bagh, Hubal Malik and Milan Bagh.
