New Delhi, 12 December (H.S.): India's nuclear power generation capacity has seen a remarkable growth in the last decade, nearly doubling from 4,780 MW in 2014 to 8,180 MW in 2024.

This progress was highlighted by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Department of Atomic Energy, Jitendra Singh, who informed the Lok Sabha about the projected tripling of capacity to 22,480 MW by 2031-32. He also outlined the key developments and future plans for achieving greater self-reliance in nuclear power generation. Jitendra Singh emphasized the revision of India's power distribution framework, which has increased the share of electricity from atomic plants to 50 per cent for the home state, with 35 per cent allocated to neighbouring states and 15 per cent to the national grid.

This reflects India's federal spirit and ensures equitable resource distribution. Singh credited this progress to various initiatives such as bulk approvals for 10 reactors, increased funding allocations, collaborations with PSUs, and limited private sector participation. He also highlighted the diverse applications of atomic energy in agriculture, healthcare and defense sectors.

Singh also mentioned India's abundant thorium reserves and indigenous projects like Bhavani being developed to harness this resource and reduce dependence on imported materials. With advancements in technology and streamlined administrative processes, India's nuclear infrastructure continues to strengthen and contribute significantly to the nation's growth.
