Nyukamdung, (Arunachal Pradesh), 18 November (HS): Amidst the beautiful valleys of the Himalayas, the 62nd anniversary of the Nyukamdung battle was celebrated with deep emotion and gratitude at the Nyukamdung War Memorial. This sacred place, located between Dirang and Sela Pass, is a symbol of the indomitable courage and sacrifice of the brave soldiers of the 62 Infantry Brigade on November 18, 1962.
On that difficult day of 1962, amidst difficult conditions and difficult mountainous terrain, the soldiers of the 62 Infantry Brigade led by Brigadier Hoshiar Singh fought bravely against the enemy. Though it was a strategic retreat, the soldiers inflicted heavy losses on the enemy and displayed unparalleled bravery.
The 25 feet high Chorten at Nyukamdung War Memorial is a sacred place to keep the stories of the sacrifices of these heroes alive for every generation.
This year's anniversary brought together the local community, youth and ex-servicemen to celebrate valour and tradition.
Ex-servicemen and jawans participated in the Trail of Remembrance cycling rally. The rally covered a gruelling 80 km journey from Nyukamdung to Phudung War Memorial to pay tributes. At the end, a wreath-laying ceremony was held in honour of Brigadier Hoshiar Singh.
Sketching and speech competitions were held in local schools, inspiring the youth with stories of valour and patriotism.
On the last day of the anniversary on Monday, the community and the Army together paid tribute to the brave soldiers. The wreath-laying ceremony began with paying tributes at the Nyukamdung War Memorial. Dignitaries, ex-servicemen, jawans and families of the martyrs witnessed this emotional moment.
Cultural performances were also held during this period. Students performed patriotic songs and traditional dances. Tibetan dance performed by LDL Monastery, Dirang added an emotional touch to the event.
Indian Army soldiers showcased their culture and military tradition through Bhangra and Gatka. The skill and discipline of Gatka mesmerized the audience.
Dog show of 30 SSB Battalion won the hearts of the audience on the occasion. The loyalty and resourcefulness of dogs showed that they are an integral part of military operations.
The event concluded with inspirational experiences of ex-servicemen. Their words filled everyone with pride and gratitude. The event reminds us of their sacrifices that ensured our independence.
The 62nd anniversary of Nyukamdung battle was not just a remembrance but a reaffirmation of the values of courage, unity and patriotism. It became an occasion to strengthen the bond between the Army and the local community which will continue to inspire generations to come. Remembering these brave soldiers of 1962, the soldiers took a pledge to uphold their ideals.
