Kolkata, 04 August (H.S.) : West Bengal Labour and Transport Minister Arjun Singh on Tuesday called for strict action against party leaders and workers accused of extortion, saying that merely expressing displeasure would not be enough and that those involved should be expelled from the party.

The issue of alleged extortion has emerged as an embarrassment for the ruling BJP government, with several senior leaders, including Shamik Bhattacharya, Dilip Ghosh, and Agnimitra Paul, recently speaking out against such activities.

Three months after the formation of the new government, allegations of extortion involving individuals claiming to be BJP workers have triggered concern within the party. While other senior leaders have issued warnings, Arjun Singh said stronger disciplinary measures were now necessary.

Currently on a tour of North Bengal, Singh visited several tea gardens in Darjeeling and later inspected the Labour Department office. Speaking to reporters during the visit, he said, There is no point in merely expressing resentment. Strict action must be taken against those accused of extortion. They are damaging the party's image. Anyone facing such allegations or found to be involved in these activities should be expelled from the party.

His remarks come days after a video went viral on social media allegedly showing a self-proclaimed BJP leader stopping sand-laden trucks and collecting money from drivers. The video was reportedly recorded by one of the truck drivers and has sparked widespread political debate.

The alleged incident has intensified discussions over extortion within political circles, with opposition parties accusing the ruling establishment of failing to curb such practices. The BJP leadership has indicated that disciplinary action would be taken if the allegations are found to be true.
