Nagaon (Assam), 04 August (HS): A firing incident inside the 34th Battalion camp of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Katimari in Assam's Nagaon district on Tuesday left two personnel dead and another critically injured. The accused Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) later allegedly died by suicide after the attack.

According to preliminary reports, ASI/GD Ballani Premabaram, a native of Andhra Pradesh, was posted at the camp's main gate. During duty, he was reportedly found without his assigned service weapon. He allegedly took an INSAS rifle from the camp guard room and moved towards the rear side of the quarter guard.

Police said he first opened fire on Head Constable Vishnu Prasad Baghel of Madhya Pradesh, who died on the spot. He then shot SI/GD Ramnaval Singh Yadav, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, who had arrived at the camp for document verification. Yadav also succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The ASI also allegedly fired at ASI Govind Shripul of the 171 Battalion, leaving him critically injured. The injured officer was rushed to De Care Hospital and later referred to Guwahati for advanced treatment.

Following the shooting, the accused reportedly entered the barracks of the 171 Battalion and fatally shot himself.

Security agencies have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the incident, which remains unclear.-------
