South 24 Parganas, 04 August (H.S.): A child sustained severe burn injuries in a tragic accident at an Anganwadi centre in Bhangar of South 24 Parganas district, triggering protests by family members and local residents. The victim's family has alleged gross negligence on the part of the Anganwadi staff, holding the cook and teacher responsible for the incident.
According to local sources, the child had gone to the Anganwadi centre as usual on Tuesday. The family alleged that the designated cook and teacher were absent at the time of the incident. Instead, a substitute worker was reportedly handling multiple responsibilities, including teaching the children, supervising them and preparing food.
During the course of cooking, a container of boiling water allegedly spilled onto the child, causing severe burn injuries. The child screamed in pain and was immediately rushed to Jirengacha Rural Hospital. After receiving primary treatment, doctors referred the child to R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata for advanced medical care. Family members said the child's condition remains critical.
As news of the incident spread, a large number of villagers gathered outside the Anganwadi centre and staged a protest. They alleged that negligence in ensuring the safety of children had led to the accident. Residents also questioned why a single person had been assigned the dual responsibility of caring for children and preparing meals. They demanded a thorough investigation and strict administrative as well as legal action against those found responsible.
Police from Polerhat Police Station reached the spot and brought the situation under control. An investigation has been initiated to ascertain who was on duty at the time of the incident, why the designated cook and teacher were absent, and how the accident occurred. Police are also examining whether all prescribed child safety norms were being followed at the Anganwadi centre.
The incident has sparked concern among parents and residents in the area, who questioned how such a serious accident could occur at a facility meant to ensure the safety and welfare of children. The administration has not yet issued an official statement. Further action is expected after the investigation report is submitted.
