The Dalai Lama, the 14th spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, is internationally respected for promoting non-violence, compassion, interfaith dialogue, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 in recognition of his commitment to peaceful methods in the struggle for the rights and cultural identity of the Tibetan people.
The Dalai Lama has lived in India since 1959 after leaving Tibet following a failed uprising against Chinese rule. He has since been based in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, which serves as the headquarters of the Tibetan government-in-exile and the centre of the Tibetan exile community.
