Accused allegedly carried out attack for 2,200 rupee advance payment and recorded video to send to social media contact

Sangrur, 28 July (H.S.): Police have arrested two youths for allegedly hurling petrol bombs at the Bharatiya Janata Party office in Sangrur. The accused reportedly carried out the attack after receiving an advance payment of just 2,200 rupee and also recorded a video of the incident. The attack took place at around 2.45 am on Monday.

Police traced and arrested the suspects within hours of the incident. The accused have been identified as Happy Singh, alias Happy, a resident of Bhammabaddi village under Longowal police station, and Jaspreet Singh, alias Jassi, a resident of Ward No. 12 in Shaheed Udham Singh Basti under Lehra police station.

Sangrur SSP Ravjot Grewal said three special teams were constituted under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Devinder Attri. With the help of human and technical intelligence, the teams traced and arrested both accused within 24 hours. A case has been registered against them under the Explosives Act.

Police also recovered the Platina motorcycle, which was allegedly used in the attack, along with two mobile phones. A separate team led by Counter Intelligence AIG Dr Simrat Kaur also coordinated with Sangrur police and made significant contributions to the investigation.

Preliminary questioning revealed that the accused were in contact with a person identified as “Rana Bhai” through social media. He had allegedly promised them a large amount of money for attacking the BJP office and sending him a video of the incident.

Before carrying out the attack, the accused received a total advance payment of 2,200 rupee through two separate transactions. They were first sent 1,200 rupee and later another 1,000 rupee.

According to police, the accused recorded the incident so that they could send the video to Rana Bhai and receive the remaining promised amount. Investigators are now examining Rana Bhai’s social media accounts and the UPI IDs used to transfer money to the accused.

Police officials said the accused would be produced before a court and their police remand would be sought. Further questioning is expected to reveal more details about the conspiracy and the involvement of other persons.
