Asansol, 28 July (H.S.): A controversy has erupted after nearly 35 large trees were allegedly felled without permission on the premises of Bengal Homeopathic College in Asansol. A written complaint has been lodged with the West Bengal Pollution Control Board, seeking an inquiry into the incident.

Local residents and environmental activists have alleged that such large-scale tree felling could not have taken place without raising serious questions about whether the required permissions were obtained. They have also demanded clarity on which department, if any, granted approval and why the trees needed to be cut down.

According to local sources, the college campus had long been known for its greenery. The sudden removal of a large number of trees has triggered widespread resentment among residents. While some believe the trees were cut in the name of development, others have described the incident as a case of administrative negligence.

The incident has also reignited concerns over environmental protection. Residents pointed out that while the government promotes large-scale plantation drives and environmental conservation campaigns, such incidents undermine those efforts and raise questions about the implementation of environmental safeguards.
