Washington, 16 July (H.S.): US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Iran has released an American woman who had been wrongfully detained in the country since December 2024. While initially withholding her identity and details surrounding her release, Trump expressed appreciation to Iran for what he described as a goodwill gesture.
Sharing the news on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, Iran has allowed an American citizen to leave the country. She was wrongfully detained in December 2024 during the tenure of 'Sleepy Joe Biden.' She is now safely out of Iran and is doing well. The United States appreciates this goodwill gesture by Iran.
According to a CNN report, following the President's Truth Social post, the White House and the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs were contacted for details regarding the woman's identity. Her lawyer later identified her as Dina Karari.
International human rights lawyer Jared Genser wrote on X, I am delighted and relieved to announce that my client and American citizen Dina Karari is now free. She had been trapped in Iran since December 2024 on false allegations. He thanked President Trump for his efforts and said his client is safe and on her way back to the United States.
A US official said that, as of last month, the US government was monitoring the cases of at least six American citizens detained in Iran. Of them, two had been officially designated as wrongfully detained by the United States.
