Prayagraj, 14 July (HS): Panki Dham Railway Station in
Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has emerged as much more than a railway station. It now
stands as a symbol of the harmonious blend of modern railway infrastructure and
spiritual heritage. Redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at an
investment of approximately Rs. 25 crore, the station offers passengers a
safer, more convenient and accessible travel experience while reflecting the
cultural identity of the region.
Established in 1981, Panki Dham Railway Station was
developed to ease the growing passenger congestion at Kanpur Central Railway
Station and to improve rail connectivity for the city's western and suburban
areas. Over the years, rapid industrial expansion, the growth of residential
townships and the increasing number of devotees visiting the renowned
Panchmukhi Shri Hanuman Temple have transformed Panki Dham into one of Kanpur's
important railway stations.
Following its redevelopment, the station has undergone a
remarkable transformation. It now features a modern two-storey station
building, spacious waiting halls, an executive lounge, retiring rooms, a
contemporary ticketing area, expanded platform shelters, modern toilets,
improved drinking water facilities and an advanced passenger information
system. Clear signage, digital display boards and enhanced lighting further
improve passenger convenience and overall travel experience.
To facilitate smooth passenger movement, the station has
been equipped with a 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge (FOB) along with an
additional 6-metre-wide FOB. Accessibility has been significantly enhanced
through ramps and lifts, making the station friendly for persons with
disabilities. Around 4,500 square metres of the station premises have been
developed into a well-planned circulating area with separate entry and exit
points, organized parking facilities, landscaped green spaces and barrier-free
movement for all passengers.
One of the station's most distinctive features is its
architectural design inspired by the spiritual significance of Panki Dham. The
façade, colour palette and artistic elements reflect the region's cultural
traditions and the enduring devotion to Lord Hanuman, offering visitors a
glimpse of Kanpur's rich heritage the moment they arrive.
The famous Panchmukhi Shri Hanuman Temple at Panki Dham is
among the major religious destinations in Uttar Pradesh. Thousands of devotees
visit the temple every Tuesday, Saturday and especially during Hanuman Jayanti.
Beyond its religious importance, the Panki region is also a major industrial hub,
home to the Panki Thermal Power Station, numerous manufacturing units and
thriving leather, textile and hosiery industries, along with vibrant commercial
establishments. The redeveloped station is therefore expected to strengthen
industrial growth, trade, employment opportunities and religious tourism alike.
Panki Dham Railway Station is one of the 156 railway
stations being redeveloped across Uttar Pradesh under the Amrit Bharat Station
Scheme. Its transformation reflects Indian Railways' vision of creating
stations that are not merely transit points but landmarks representing a city's
identity, cultural heritage and aspirations for modern development.
Today, the redeveloped Panki Dham Railway Station stands as
a new gateway to Kanpur—offering world-class passenger amenities, seamless
accessibility, modern infrastructure and a memorable travel experience while
reinforcing the city's position as an important centre of faith, industry and
progress.
