Tehran/Vienna, 13 July (H.S.): Russia’s Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, has described any attack on nuclear facilities as a crime and a grave violation of international law. He warned that any strike on Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant could have severe and devastating consequences for the countries of the Persian Gulf.

In a post on the social media platform X, Ulyanov said that targeting nuclear installations is contrary to international law and stressed that any such action must be prevented.

According to Iran’s state-run Press TV, Russia’s remarks came after reports circulated on social media claiming that parts of Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant had been targeted. However, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) categorically denied the reports.

The developments come after the recent ceasefire between the United States and Iran reportedly collapsed, leading to renewed direct military confrontation between the two countries. As tensions escalated, the U.S. military launched airstrikes on Iranian military installations and missile sites around the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Iran fired ballistic missiles at the headquarters of the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet and other American military installations across the Gulf region.

In an official statement, the AEOI clarified that the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant remains completely safe and that all its units are operating normally without any disruption. The organization added that any official information regarding Iran’s nuclear facilities would only be released through its authorized communication channels.

The latest developments come amid heightened regional tensions. Iran has claimed that its navy thwarted attempts to create instability in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz through the movement of what it described as unauthorized vessels.

The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant is one of Iran’s principal sources of electricity. Developed with Russian assistance, the facility has a total generating capacity of 915 megawatts and produces approximately 6 to 7 terawatt-hours of electricity annually. The plant’s first unit was designed with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts. According to official figures, it has so far generated more than 80 million megawatt-hours of nuclear electricity, which has been supplied to Iran’s national power grid.

Amid ongoing economic sanctions and energy challenges, the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant is regarded as a critical component of Iran’s energy security and national strategic infrastructure.
