Rains

Thiruvananthapuram, 07 June (H.S.):The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across Kerala until Tuesday, warning of isolated heavy to very heavy showers in several parts of the State. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant as persistent rain is expected to affect both central and northern districts.

As a precautionary measure, the IMD has issued Orange Alerts for seven districts on Sunday — Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod — indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations. The remaining seven districts have been placed under Yellow Alert, signifying the possibility of heavy rain.

In view of the adverse weather conditions, the district administration in Idukki has imposed a night travel restriction in hilly areas. The restriction will remain in force from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. to ensure public safety, particularly in landslide-prone regions and areas vulnerable to falling trees and flash floods.

Rain warnings have been issued for all districts of Kerala on Sunday. The IMD has advised residents living in low-lying areas, riverbanks and mountainous regions to exercise caution and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

For Monday, Orange Alerts have been declared in Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod, while all other districts, except those in the northern belt, will remain under Yellow Alert. On Tuesday, the Orange Alert will extend to Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, with rain warnings continuing across most parts of the State except Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha.

The Meteorological Department attributed the expected intense rainfall over northern Kerala to a cyclonic circulation prevailing over the region. The weather system is likely to enhance moisture inflow and trigger sustained rain activity over the coming days.

Meanwhile, fishing activities have been prohibited along the Kerala, Lakshadweep and Karnataka coasts until Tuesday due to rough sea conditions and strong winds. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the southwest monsoon gains strength across the State.
