Kochi, 07 June (H.S.):

Kerala on Sunday bade an emotional farewell to veteran Malayalam actor Salim Kumar, whose unique ability to make audiences laugh and reflect made him one of the most beloved figures in the state’s cultural landscape. Thousands gathered with tear-filled eyes at his residence, “Laughing Villa,” in North Paravur, where the actor was cremated with official state honours.

In keeping with his personal wishes, the funeral was conducted without religious rituals. His sons, Chandu and Aaromal, lit the funeral pyre as family members, friends, political leaders, film personalities and admirers looked on in grief.

The actor’s residence witnessed deeply emotional scenes as people from all walks of life arrived to pay their final respects. Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, Union Minister Suresh Gopi, actors Jayaram, Ramesh Pisharody and Navya Nair were among those who attended the funeral. Despite intermittent rain, thousands continued to stream into the area, underscoring the immense affection the public held for the actor.

Earlier in the day, Salim Kumar’s mortal remains were placed at the North Paravur Town Hall for public homage. The body was brought from Amrita Hospital in Kochi in the morning, and a steady flow of mourners paid their respects throughout the day. Following the public viewing, the body was draped in a Congress party flag before being taken in a procession to his residence.

Tributes poured in from across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Salim Kumar as a versatile performer whose memorable roles left a lasting impression on Indian cinema. Malayalam superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal also paid tribute through social media. Mammootty said the actor’s death was an irreparable loss, while Mohanlal remembered him as a close friend both within and beyond the film industry.

Chief Minister Satheesan said Kerala had lost not just a celebrated actor but a brother, while CPM leader Pinarayi Vijayan described his death as an irreplaceable loss to Malayalam cinema.
