Kochi , 07 June (H.S.):

Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan on Sunday paid an emotional tribute to veteran actor Salim Kumar, describing his death as a personal loss and a major setback to Malayalam cinema.

In a condolence message, the Chief Minister said Malayalam cinema had lost not only a gifted and versatile performer but that he had also lost a brother-like friend with whom he shared a deep personal bond.

Recalling Salim Kumar’s unwavering convictions, Satheesan said the actor was a rare individual who never hesitated to express his political beliefs publicly, regardless of personal consequences. He noted that Salim Kumar remained steadfast in his views throughout his life and was courageous enough to openly identify himself with his political ideals at a time when many public figures preferred to remain neutral.

“Salim Kumar was much more than the prince of comedy for me. He was someone with whom I shared an intense emotional connection. He was a source of pride for our land and a man who never compromised on his convictions,” the Chief Minister said.

Satheesan remembered the actor as a loyal friend who enthusiastically participated in his election campaigns and celebrated political victories as though they were his own. He said Salim Kumar’s affection and support went far beyond the boundaries of public life and politics.

The Chief Minister also highlighted Salim Kumar’s remarkable contribution to Indian cinema, saying he repeatedly proved that his talent extended far beyond comedy. While he first won audiences with his impeccable comic timing and memorable performances, he later established himself as one of Malayalam cinema’s finest character actors.

According to Satheesan, Salim Kumar displayed world-class excellence across multiple dimensions of acting. “With one face he made people laugh, and with another he touched hearts with profound emotion,” he said, reflecting on the actor’s unique ability to seamlessly move between humour and pathos.

Concluding his tribute, the Chief Minister said the loss was deeply personal. “Malayalam cinema has lost a brilliant artist, and I have lost a brother,” he said, bidding a final farewell to one of Kerala’s most beloved actors.
