Siliguri, 04 June (H.S.) : Naxalbari police arrested a young man in possession of brown sugar during a late-night operation on Wednesday.

The accused has been identified as Divakar Sikdar, a resident of Khalpara area under Naxalbari. Police said the action was taken near the Kotiajot cremation ground following a tip-off.

According to officials, local residents had alerted police after noticing suspected drug-related activity in the area during the night. Acting on the information, a police team conducted a raid and detained the suspect.

During a search, police recovered a packet of contraband substance from the pocket of the accused’s trousers. Subsequent examination confirmed it to be brown sugar. Authorities said approximately 51 grams of the narcotic substance was seized from his possession.

A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He is scheduled to be produced before the Siliguri court on Thursday.
