Kolkata, 04 June (H.S.) : The West Bengal government has initiated the process of filling thousands of vacancies across the three tiers of the rural local governance system, aiming to strengthen administrative efficiency at the grassroots level. The recruitment will cover gram panchayats, panchayat samitis, and zilla parishads.

According to data released by the rural development department, there are currently 11,548 vacancies in gram panchayats, 630 in panchayat samitis, and 650 in zilla parishads across the state. In view of these shortages, the government has decided to move ahead with a structured recruitment drive at multiple levels.

Rural Development Minister and senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh chaired a departmental administrative review meeting in Salt Lake, Kolkata, on Thursday, where he shared details of the initiative. He said the government has approved recruitment for 5,509 posts in gram panchayats, 564 posts in panchayat samitis, and 463 posts in zilla parishads.

Ghosh said the recruitment drive is aimed at improving the quality of public service delivery in rural areas and ensuring the effective implementation of development schemes. He added that strengthening grassroots administrative structures has become necessary, especially in light of challenges faced in the execution of several centrally sponsored programmes.

Officials said the recruitment process will be carried out in phases, and detailed guidelines regarding eligibility criteria, examinations, and appointments will be issued in due course.
