Kolkata, 04 June (H.S.) : A Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor from Ward 42, identified as Mahesh Kumar Sharma, has been arrested by Kolkata Police on charges of alleged extortion and related offences. The arrest was made on Wednesday night, and the accused is currently being interrogated by investigators.
According to police sources, a complaint had been lodged against the councillor at the Bowbazar Police Station last year, alleging fraud and forcible collection of money. Following a change in administrative focus, the case was taken up for investigation, leading to his arrest.
Officials said Sharma is expected to be produced before a court on Thursday. The police are likely to seek his custody for further interrogation, citing the need for continued investigation into the allegations.
The arrest comes amid a series of similar actions against civic representatives in Kolkata. In recent months, several TMC councillors have been arrested in separate cases involving allegations of intimidation and extortion linked to traders, promoters, and local businesses.
Police sources added that investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the alleged network and financial transactions involved in the case. Further developments are awaited as the matter proceeds in court.
